Lahore Witnessing Record-Breaking Rainfall and Urban Flooding

Lahore, a historic city, has been experiencing non-stop heavy rain for the past eight hours, breaking all previous records,

according to a statement by Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi. He mentioned that

“It is a situation of urban flooding on Lahore’s roads as the canal has also been overflowing,”

The continuous rain has caused water to flood the streets of Lahore, entering houses and offices. Areas like Gulberg and Canal Road are particularly affected by the heavy rainfall.

This rainfall event is extraordinary, with Lahore receiving a record-breaking 291 mm of rain in just ten hours. This surpasses the highest recorded rainfall of 256 mm earlier this year on June 26. The city has not witnessed such intense rainfall in such a short period in the past 30 years.

The government is actively involved in relief efforts, with the provincial cabinet and administration working to ensure proper drainage of the rainwater. The Chief Minister is personally overseeing the relief activities and maintaining contact with the administration.

Officials are optimistic that the water will be drained from the low-lying areas within a few hours after the rain stops. The drainage system is being utilized to its full capacity to manage the excessive rainwater.

In addition to the flooding, the heavy rain has caused disruptions in the form of strong winds. These conditions have led to power outages in various parts of Lahore, as more than 200 power feeders operated by the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) have tripped.

The situation calls for swift action from the government and the community to address the immediate challenges posed by the heavy rainfall and its aftermath.
