Sadia Danish becomes GB’s first woman deputy speaker

Gilgit-Baltistan experienced a significant change in its legislature as it elected its first female deputy speaker on Monday. Sadia Danish, a leader from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and nominated by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), assumed the position without any opposition. Her nomination received support from the forward bloc of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The process of electing the deputy speaker for the Gilgit-Baltistan assembly concluded smoothly, with Sadia Danish being elected unopposed. She then took the oath of office, which was administered by Speaker Nazeer Advocate during the assembly’s 22nd session.

Interestingly, the PTI did not submit any nomination papers for the position. Previously, they had removed the speaker by passing a no-confidence motion against him and appointed their deputy speaker as the new speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan assembly.

The session of the assembly, which led to this historic development, was chaired by the speaker.

Sadia Danish brings valuable experience to her new role, as she was a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan legislative assembly from 2009 to 2014 and also served in the Gilgit-Baltistan cabinet.
