BYD Sold More EVs in 30 Days Than US Did in 3 Months

Chinese automaker BYD has set a new sales record after selling more than 300,000 fully electric vehicles in October 2026, exceeding the number of EVs sold across the entire United States during the third quarter.

According to BYD’s latest sales figures, the company sold 305,743 battery-electric passenger cars in October, an increase of 37% compared with the same month last year.

For comparison, the US recorded 262,649 electric vehicle sales during July, August, and September combined, according to Kelley Blue Book estimates.

This means BYD sold more fully electric cars in a single month than all automakers combined sold in the US during those three months.

BYD Electric Car Sales Reach a New Record

BYD sold a total of 490,168 new energy vehicles in October, including fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and commercial vehicles.

The figure represents an 11% increase from October 2025 and the company’s highest monthly sales total in 2026.

Fully electric passenger cars accounted for 305,743 sales, marking the first time BYD crossed the 300,000 mark in a single month.

Electric cars accounted for about 63% of the company’s passenger vehicle sales in October.

The company also recorded its third consecutive month of growth in fully electric vehicle sales.

During the first ten months of 2026, BYD sold approximately 1.95 million fully electric passenger cars, nearly 6% more than during the same period last year.

BYD Sells More EVs Than the Entire US Market

The latest figures highlight the difference between BYD’s sales and the US electric vehicle market.

According to Kelley Blue Book, Americans purchased 262,649 new electric vehicles in the third quarter of 2026.

That was the strongest quarterly performance for the US EV market in a year.

However, the figure was still approximately 43,000 vehicles lower than BYD’s October sales alone.

US electric vehicle sales increased 6.1% compared with the previous quarter but declined 39.5% compared with the third quarter of 2025.

Electric vehicles accounted for approximately 6.4% of new vehicle sales in the US during the quarter.

The comparison shows how much larger BYD’s electric vehicle business has become, although its sales cover multiple international markets rather than China alone.

BYD’s Hybrid Car Sales Are Declining

While BYD’s fully electric vehicle sales reached a new record, demand for its plug-in hybrid models declined.

The company sold 177,382 plug-in hybrid passenger cars in October, down approximately 17% from the same month last year.

Through the first ten months of 2026, BYD sold around 1.63 million plug-in hybrids, representing an 11% annual decline.

This suggests that fully electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly important part of BYD’s business.

Despite the recent monthly growth, BYD’s overall vehicle sales for the first ten months of 2026 remained slightly below last year’s levels.

The company sold approximately 3.62 million vehicles during the period, down 2.2% compared with 2025.

BYD’s Overseas Sales Continue to Grow

BYD is also expanding rapidly outside China.

The company exported 170,194 vehicles in October, more than double the number shipped overseas during the same month last year.

International shipments accounted for approximately 35% of BYD’s total vehicle sales during October.

During the first ten months of 2026, the company shipped more than 1.5 million vehicles to overseas markets.

BYD is expanding its presence in Europe, Southeast Asia, South America, and other regions as competition increases in its home market.

The automaker is targeting approximately 2 million overseas shipments by the end of 2026, with expectations that the figure could exceed 2.5 million in 2027.

BYD is also introducing new vehicles with improved battery technology and faster charging to attract more buyers.

The company’s October results show strong demand for its fully electric cars, even as its plug-in hybrid sales and overall year-to-date vehicle sales remain under pressure.
