Samsung to Focus on AI Chip Production After Outsourcing DRAM Manufacturing Entirely

Samsung is reportedly preparing to shift more of its memory production toward high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, as demand from the AI industry continues to grow.

According to inside sources, the company is already discussing expanded outsourced DDR5 production with manufacturing partners. The move would free up more of Samsung’s own production capacity for higher-value HBM chips.

Partners Asked to Expand DDR5 Production

Samsung is reportedly urging some of its partners to complete their DDR5 production lines ahead of schedule.

The company is also considering investment in additional outsourced production capacity.

By moving more conventional DRAM manufacturing outside its own facilities, Samsung could use more internal capacity for HBM production, which has become increasingly important as AI companies build larger computing systems.

HBM Becomes a Bigger Priority

HBM demand has risen sharply alongside the expansion of AI infrastructure.

Companies developing and operating AI systems require large amounts of high-speed memory, making HBM one of the more valuable parts of the semiconductor market.

Samsung has therefore been looking to increase its exposure to this segment while reducing the amount of in-house capacity dedicated to lower-value memory products.

Samsung Is Talking to Partners Across Asia

Samsung has reportedly held discussions with several manufacturing partners.

These include Dreamtech in India, Hanyang Digitech in Vietnam, and SFA Semicon in the Philippines.

The talks reportedly focus on accelerating DDR5 production and expanding outsourced manufacturing capacity.

DDR5 Supply Could Face More Pressure

The transition could also raise questions about the conventional DDR5 market.

DDR5 supply is already tight, creating higher costs and availability concerns for PC builders, server operators and laptop buyers.

Any disruption during Samsung’s shift toward greater HBM production could put additional pressure on the market.

For now, Samsung appears focused on increasing HBM capacity while relying more heavily on external partners for conventional DRAM production.
