Karachi Imposes New Restrictions on Hotels and Wedding Halls

Karachi authorities have banned hotels and wedding halls near Jinnah International Airport from openly dumping food waste and garbage at night to reduce bird-strike risks.

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, which reviewed aviation safety within the four-kilometer funnel zone.

Around 25 to 30 hotels, restaurants, and wedding halls in the area were identified as potential sources of waste that could attract birds.

Under the new rules, these establishments must improve waste management arrangements, appoint sanitation staff, pack discarded food and garbage in polyethylene bags, and transport it to designated disposal points.

Measures to prevent kites and other birds from gathering in the area during nighttime and morning hours were also discussed.

Commissioner Naqvi directed the deputy commissioners of Malir and Korangi to submit a comprehensive report within three weeks on further steps to reduce bird strikes.
